Successful cataract surgeries in glaucoma patients treated by Dr Matt Oliva, HCP Board Member dedicated to  transfer and share skills that strengthen and create sustainable eye care systems around the globe.  

“In sub-Saharan Africa, glaucoma is a devastating and often neglected problem. It is a leading cause of blindness, second only to cataract” said Dr Oliva.  

While blindness from glaucoma may be preventable, this is dependent upon early diagnosis and delivery of long-term effective treatment. Glaucoma poses a particular problem in sub-Saharan Africa due to both higher age-specific prevalence, higher risk for open-angle glaucoma, late presentation and low levels of coverage and adherence with treatment.  

Glaucoma in Sub Sahara Africa is a neglected public health challenge that needs immediate and comprehensive approach.
