All across the United States, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare workers recently knelt in solidarity during demonstrations for #WhiteCoatsforBlackLives. Many organizations, from the American Medical Association to Harvard Medical School also sent out statements to their communities condemning racism. These actions were a show of support, and a nice gesture, but many black physicians remain skeptical of real change happening inside of academia or the hospital walls. And, for good reason. One need only read the hashtag #BlackintheIvory to begin to understand.
In part one of this series, we heard from black doctors who discussed their emotional experiences fighting two pandemics at the same time, and in part two, we will explore their feelings about the role of their colleagues and institutions in this critical moment. Will they make a sustainable change? Is it finally time to have more than hope? Or is it, again, empty words.
